Just thought I'd add a little to the story. I was in the 27th from 1960 =
to 64. I was an A/C electrician back then and on the day 0045 caught =
fire I was in the shop. I heard the six begin to roll then kicked in =
the A/B, then silence. I jumped up on the work bench and saw the pilot =
runing from the A/C. The scuttlebutt (Navy talk) was that the engine =
had just come back from overhaul and that aluminum washers were used to =
attach the tailpipe to the engine instead of titanium. The bins holding =
the washers were close together and AL washers had fallen into the =
Titanium bin. The heat from the engine has melted the AL washers =
causing a burn thru.
Have you ever thought of joining the 1st Fighter Assn. We have =
great reunions and get to see all of the newest fighters.
