While at the Martin Company in Baltimore, both F-106B 57-2519 and F-106B 57-2529 supported a flight simulation program designed to replicate flight characteristics (for the back seat pilot) of different kinds of aircraft, like the Martin X-23, X-24A & X-24B lifting bodies and space re-entry vehicles. Click here for a March 04 confirmation e-mail from two retired Convair Reps, Jim Day & Joe Sylvia. Click here for a 09 Jan 07 e-mail from Don Ward, a pilot involved with the flight simulation program.
Both 57-2519 and 57-2529 were put in storage as NF-106Bs at McClellan AFB CA in the early 70s. In the mid 70s, it was decided to use the two NFs to repair crash damaged aircraft, so the NFs were declared surplus.
The above left photo is one of the two aircraft covered in Spraylat protective coating on display in 1973. The above right photo shows what was left of them in the early to mid 80s.
