Erv,

Thanks for the quick response.  Your knowledge of the F-106 is impressive, both of your guesses are correct. The aircraft was 72-466 from Otis.  I read the story about the other flame out and experience most of the same situations except I gave up on the warning lights because they were all lit like a Christmas tree. I did have an accessory drive failure (pre PUP) which caused the ac/dc electric and every thing else to fail. The Rat worked which gave me back flight control but nothing else. The drag chute and the stored air ran the brakes enough to stop on the runway.

I have the story which was published in the interceptor some time after Nov 75.  I have a copy somewhere which I will look for and scan and the AFA award.

I also got an air medal for it.  I have the stuff in storage but will look for it.

Do you known if there were any other flameout landings other than these two?

Regards

Tom

Mr. Gorman,

Yes, I'd very much like to publish your story on the site. If you would, write it up in an e-mail the way you want it published and I'll add your e-mail directly to the site. I can also add a scan of the award, if you have a way of scanning it.

There were two tail numbers that ended in 466. One was 56-0466 stationed at McChord at the time of your incident and the other was 57-2466 stationed at Otis. I'm guessing you were out of Otis? Also, 1975 was about the time the F-106s were receiving the Power Upgrade Program (PUP) that replaced the multi- generator Constant Speed Drive (CSD) with a single generator. I'll guess your bird still had the old CSD and you had an AC/DC power failure? How close am I on both of these guesses?

In case you haven't seen it yet, on 59-0073's page, there is a 1961 Interceptor magazine article on "Deadsticking the Deltas" that I'm sure you can relate to. See http://www.convairf-106deltadart.com/590073page.html

Anyway, thank-you for writing and Marty & I enjoy telling the F-106 story. Inputs like yours make it "up close & personal" to our viewers.

Interesting FYI...
You did a great job on the web site.
I don't know if you knew about this or were interested but did you know that a F-106 Tail 466 was dead-sticked in Nov 1975 into Albany Airport NY.  The accessory drive failed and caused the engine to fail completely and was successfully landed without further damage. I was the pilot and received a Earl Ricks National award for outstanding airmanship from the Air Force Association in 1976.    Landing fighters without power is somewhat unusual.  If you are interested in knowing more info let me know. I liked every thing you did on this web site and thank for your work.  It brought back memories of my 1000 hours flying the F106.
